RV Battery Upgrades
Upgrade to lithium or quality AGM batteries for more usable capacity, faster charging and a far longer lifespan — designed, supplied and installed at our Christchurch workshop for motorhomes, caravans and campervans.
More Power, Longer Off-Grid
Your house battery is the heart of your RV's power system — it decides how long you can stay off-grid and what you can run. Many factory setups use basic lead-acid or entry-level AGM batteries that limit your time away from power and wear out quickly.
Upgrading to lithium (LiFePO4) or a quality AGM system gives you more usable capacity, faster charging, lighter weight and a much longer lifespan. We design, supply and install the right battery system for how you travel — at our Christchurch workshop, for owners across Canterbury and the wider South Island.
Lithium vs AGM — Compared
Both have their place. AGM is the budget-friendly choice for lighter use; lithium costs more up front but wins on capacity, weight, charging and lifespan. Here's how they stack up:
| Compare | AGM | Lithium Best performance |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Lifespan | ~3–5 years | 10+ years |
| Usable capacity | ~50% of rated | ~80–100% of rated |
| Weight | Heavier | Much lighter |
| Charge speed | Slower | Fast |
| Best for | Occasional / budget use | Frequent & off-grid travel |
Not sure which suits you? We'll weigh it up against your travel style, loads and budget — no pressure to over-spec.
A Complete Battery Upgrade
A battery swap is more than dropping in a new box. A proper upgrade includes:
System Design & Sizing
We size the bank to your real power use, loads and how long you stay off-grid — not a guess.
Quality Batteries
Trusted lithium (LiFePO4) and AGM batteries with a built-in BMS for safe, reliable performance.
Safe Install & Protection
Correct cable sizing, fusing, isolation and secure mounting — wired to New Zealand standards.
Charging Integration
We make sure your solar, DC-DC and mains charging suit the new battery, so it charges properly.
Monitoring
Optional battery monitor or shunt so you can see charge level and usage at a glance.

We show you what your new system can run and how to get the best life from it.
The Benefits of a Better Battery
- More usable capacity — run more, for longer, between charges.
- Longer lifespan — quality lithium can last 10+ years.
- Faster charging — make the most of solar and driving time.
- Lighter weight — especially with lithium, saving payload.
- Better for off-grid — confident freedom camping without flat batteries.
- Runs bigger loads — pairs well with an inverter for 230V appliances.

Should I choose AGM or lithium?
AGM is more affordable up front and fine for occasional or budget use. Lithium (LiFePO4) costs more but gives far more usable capacity, longer life, faster charging and less weight — so it usually wins for frequent or off-grid travel.
We'll recommend the right fit based on your travel style, loads and budget rather than pushing the most expensive option.
How long do lithium batteries last?
Quality lithium (LiFePO4) batteries commonly last 10+ years and many thousands of charge cycles — typically several times the life of AGM (around 3–5 years), which often makes them better value over time despite the higher upfront cost.
Can I just swap my lead-acid batteries for lithium?
Not always a straight swap. Lithium charges differently, so your charging sources — solar controller, DC-DC charger, mains charger and sometimes the alternator setup — need to be lithium-compatible to charge it correctly and safely.
We check your whole charging system as part of the upgrade and adjust what's needed so the new battery performs and lasts.
How much battery capacity do I need?
It depends on your daily power use and how long you stay off-grid between charges. The quickest way to get a starting figure is our solar & power calculator, and we'll confirm the right size when we design your system.
Will a new battery work with my existing solar and inverter?
Do you upgrade batteries in caravans and motorhomes?
Yes — we install battery systems in motorhomes, caravans and campervans, all at our Christchurch workshop. Each upgrade is tailored to the vehicle, your loads and how you travel.
