Important: Changes to Freedom Camping Regulations
New Zealand has implemented significant changes to self-containment requirements. From 7 June 2026 onwards, all private vehicles must be inspected and certified under the new Green warrant requirements.
The new regulations require fixed toilets (portable toilets no longer qualify), adequate fresh and waste water capacity, and proper waste disposal systems. If you're planning to get certified or renew your certification, make sure you understand the new requirements.
