Workshop & Mobile EWOF Inspections — Christchurch & Canterbury

An Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) confirms your motorhome or caravan's 230V mains electrical system is safe and compliant — and it's required before you can self-contain and freedom camp in New Zealand. Every inspection is carried out personally by Brent Clarkson, an EWRB Registered Electrical Inspector — at our Christchurch workshop, or with his mobile EWOF inspection service that comes to you across Canterbury.

What Is an EWOF?

The Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) is a structured safety inspection of the 230V AC mains electrical system in your motorhome, caravan or campervan. It checks that your wiring, outlets, protective devices and earthing are safe and meet the relevant New Zealand standard for RV electrical installations (AS/NZS 3001.2).

An EWOF is mandatory for self-contained motorhomes and caravans — you need a current certificate to obtain self-containment and legally freedom camp at designated sites around New Zealand. It's also the responsible thing to do whenever you buy, sell, or have electrical work done on your RV.

At RV Solutions in Christchurch, your inspection and any follow-up electrical work is handled in-house by a registered inspector — so if something needs putting right, we can repair it and re-test, all in one place.

What's Checked

What We Test in Your EWOF Inspection

A comprehensive check of every part of your RV's mains electrical system that matters for safety:

230V AC Systems

Full testing of mains power — wiring, outlets, circuit breakers and earth bonding — for safe shore-power operation.

Safety Devices

RCDs, circuit breakers and isolation switches tested to confirm they trip correctly and protect you.

Earth Continuity

Critical testing of earthing and bonding to ensure effective fault protection and prevent shock hazards.

Polarity & Wiring

Verification that all connections are correct, properly terminated and meet NZ wiring standards.

Visual Inspection

A thorough check of components for damage, wear, compliance and proper installation practices.

Why It Matters

Why an EWOF Is Worth It

More than a box to tick — it protects your safety and your freedom to travel.

Legal Requirement

A valid EWOF is mandatory for self-contained motorhomes and caravans. Without one, you can't get a self-containment certificate or legally freedom camp at designated NZ sites.

Fire Safety

Faulty electrics are a leading cause of RV fires. Testing finds dangerous wiring, overloaded circuits and poor connections before they become catastrophic.

Electrical Safety

Verifying earth connections, RCD operation and correct wiring protects you and your family from electric shock — especially on shore power or when using an inverter.

System Reliability

Inspection catches worn components and deteriorating connections before they leave you stranded — fewer breakdowns and more confidence on the road.

How It Works

Our EWOF Inspection Process

1

Visual Inspection

A full examination of installations, wiring, connections and components for damage, wear and compliance.

2

Electrical Testing

Test equipment measures earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, RCD operation and circuit integrity.

3

Safety Device Check

RCDs, breakers and isolation switches are verified to confirm they operate correctly and protect you.

4

Certificate & Report

On passing, we issue your official EWOF certificate — valid for 4 years — with clear documentation of every test.

Common Questions

EWOF Questions, Answered

Who carries out the EWOF inspection?

Your inspection is carried out by Brent Clarkson, an EWRB Registered Electrical Inspector and Electrical Engineer with decades of experience in RV and caravan electrical systems. You can call or email Brent directly to book.

Who needs an EWOF?

A current EWOF is mandatory for all self-contained motorhomes and caravans in New Zealand. To freedom camp at designated sites you need both a valid self-containment certificate and current EWOF certification.

How long does EWOF certification last?

Your EWOF certificate is valid for 4 years from the date of issue. Renew it before it expires to stay compliant for self-containment and freedom camping.

How long does the inspection take?

Most EWOF inspections take 1–2 hours depending on your vehicle and electrical setup. We'll let you know the expected timeframe when you book.

Do you offer a mobile EWOF service?

Yes. You can bring your RV to our Christchurch workshop in Sydenham, or Brent can come to you with a mobile EWOF service across Canterbury. Get in touch to check availability for your location.

What if my RV fails the inspection?

You'll get a clear report explaining exactly what needs attention. Because the work is done in-house, our workshop can carry out the repairs and re-test your system — we'll get your RV safe and compliant.

Can I get EWOF testing if I'm not self-contained?

Absolutely. Even when it isn't legally required, an electrical safety check is worthwhile for any RV. We carry out the same comprehensive inspection so you know your system is safe and reliable.
